Last weekend, William Church Winery released their spring wines: 2013 Sur La Mer, 2014 Malbec, 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2014 Keystone Series Syrah. #WAWineMonth
At their winery in the Woodinville Warehouse District and their cozy tasting room in the Hollywood District of Woodinville, owners Rod & Leslie and wine maker Noah, along with their staff and volunteers, were pouring their four red wine releases. Although the 2013 Sur La Mer was made by a former wine maker, all of the 2014 vintage William Church Winery wines were crafted by current wine maker Noah Fox Reed.
2013 Sur La Mer
Sur La Mer is a right bank Bordeaux blend composed of 58% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 8% Malbec. The Sur La Mer is full of juicy dark fruit in aroma and flavor. Slight tarragon on the nose that is less distinct on the palate. The tannins provide structure but do not overwhelm in this plush medium bodied wine. Although this wine was aged 15 months in 42% new French oak, oak characteristics add subtle nuances and layers to the wine versus the oak pushing for a starring role.
This Washington wine from William Church is 100% Malbec from Gamache Vineyards. It is an inky purple color wine with a nice blueberry aroma a slight tinge of the aroma of smores! This Washington Malbec has a surprising sweet flash on the tip of the tongue before the tartness of the blueberries kicks in. If you are familiar with former vintages of William Church Malbecs, you might find that brief burst of berry sweetness a surprise. In addition to the prominent blueberry, notes of cedar and pepper are there for you to savor as well. This Malbec has pleasing acidity and solid tannic structure in this medium bodied wine. Like many Malbecs, this wine will be an excellent accompaniment to barbecues, especially to foods that have been treated with a spice rub versus a very sweet barbecue sauce that would be sweeter than the wine.
2014 Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautiful burgundy color. This vintage is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petite Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. The nose is lightly aromatic with red fruits and brambly fruits. The flavors of this Washington Cabernet Sauvignon are redolent with red juicy tart cherries and Asian plums with a touch of toffee and a sprinkle of baking spice.
2014 Lewis Syrah Keystone Series Reserve
The limited edition Keystone Series Reserve is new to William Church Winery and will feature a vineyard specific wine. The Lewis Vineyard is a very cool site in Prosser. The Syrah for this wine was the latest fruit to come in to William Church Winery that year. The Lewis Vineyard Syrah arrived on October 29! Wind blown, the vines on their acre of Lewis Vineyard are stressed, resulting in very concentrated fruit.
You will note and appreciate that fruit concentration when you taste this special wine. The nose is almost figgy and definitely plummy with a side of pomegranate. On the palate, you are rewarded with juicy black plum, blackberry pie, anise and vanilla. A touch of graphite grounds the intense fruit and spice. The tannins were velvet coated and provided solid structure to this plush Washington Syrah.
