Every time we open up a bottle of wine from Northstar Winery, it takes me back to each joyous visit we’ve made to the winery’s tasting room. If you haven’t yet met the nice people of Northstar, do so the next time you are in Walla Walla. Brilliant ruby in color, Northstar’s 2003 Walla Walla Valley Merlot initially releases a musky, earthy scent with some clove then opens up with more herbal notes. Perhaps bay leaf? On the palate, the wine delivers cherries, plum/almost prune, and a hint of vanilla. The wine has some nice acidity and silky tannins. A dish of risotto topped with Provencal fennel sauce was a delicious accompaniment.
