Believe it or not, summer is coming to Seattle. And with that summer sunshine comes the desire for a beer: something light, cold, crisp and easy drinking. As the temperature rises, I look for a beer with a lower alcohol content. I want a thirst quencher not a dehydrator after working in the yard. Sometimes these beers are called “lawn mower beers” because they hit the spot when you want to relax after working in the sun. These lower alcohol beers are more commonly referred to as session beers.

Session Beer
Any beer that contains no higher than 5 percent ABV, featuring a balance between malt and hop characters (ingredients) and, typically, a clean finish – a combination of which creates a beer with high drinkability. The purpose of a session beer is to allow a beer drinker to have multiple beers, within a reasonable time period or session, without overwhelming the senses or reaching inappropriate levels of intoxication. (Yes, you can drink and enjoy beer without getting drunk.)  – Beer Advocate

Session Beer Fest

Conceived and sponsored by friend and blogger Paul “Fruit Trees” Orchard of the Northwest Beer Guide, Session Beer Fest is a ten day event celebrating Northwest beer at 5.00% Alcohol By Volume (ABV) or below. These are the kind of Washington beers that you can spend an evening drinking with friends and not worry about your head the next day. Because isn’t that what beer is about? I can’t deny that getting drunk is the goal for some people, some of the time BUT beer is more often treasured for the opportunity to connect and communicate over a tasty brew. Come try these delicious low alcohol local beers that food friendly and friendly to your body!

Enjoying a beer session with friends.

Starting Thursday July 14th, Naked City Brewery and Tap House will be hosting the Session Beer Fest.  For the 10 day festival, there will be at least 12 different beers under 5% ABV or below. As each beer is depleted, it will be replaced by another local beer at  5% ABV or below.  19 different Washington breweries are participating in this event and you might see a couple of kegs from neighboring Oregon and Idaho. In addition, there will be a few low alcohol ciders featured as well for a change of pace and palate.
