The 2009 Grand Awards Tasting

The 2010 Seattle Wine Awards’ Grand Awards Tasting is on Sunday June 13. To help you get the most out of the Grand Tasting experience, we turned to Kristen Young, Director of Wine at Waterfront Seafood Grill, for advice. Kristen should know. As a member of the Seattle Wine Awards Tasting Panel she evaluated 150 wines a day during the review process. Kristen offers some basic wine tasting tips as well as tips for the adventurous taster!

Tips for Wine Tasting

  • Pace yourself.
  • Hydrate yourself.
  • Cleanse your palate with food between tastes. At the Grand Tasting, you will have access to a lavish lunch buffet.
  • Remember, it’s hip to spit. I know, some of you think this is just plain gross. However, if you really want to assess as many wines as possible, this is a key strategy. I can promise you that you won’t be the only one spitting!
  • Refresh your nasal passages with this exercise – clap your hands together and rub them as fast as you can, heating them up. Then put them up to your nose. If you’ve never done this before, I know it sounds odd. However, I’ve done this as part of my Yoga practice, and Kristen says it is also done in Tai Chi.
  • Be adventurous – try a varietal other than what you typically drink. The Grand Tasting will offer many wine varietals to experience.

How to Be an Adventurous Taster

Let’s face it, we’re often creatures of habit consuming the same wine time and time again. At a tasting event such as this one, it is the perfect opportunity to try something different!

Give Syrah a chance. With profiles ranging from floral and light to meaty and full bodied, Kristen was very impressed with the Syrahs poured during judging.

Revisit Riesling. The Rieslings of today are quite different from those that our parents drank! Kristen characterizes this variety as pretty and food friendly. When pairing with food, match it with spicy dishes or butter sauces.

Ask someone from a winery what his/her favorite wine is at the event. Then try it! Check out the Twitter screen set up at the Rainier Club to follow the tweets about the tasting. See which wines people are loving and tweeting about!

Want to learn more about wine tasting? Keep your eye on the Waterfront Seafood Grill events page for Wine Boot Camp, offered once a quarter. The restaurant is also known to host fantastic winemaker dinners. I can attest to the quality of Chef Levine’s food pairings.
