The annual Belgian Fest celebrates Washington brewer creativity with Belgian beer yeast. Every January, the Washington Beer Commission brings breweries from across Washington state to Seattle, to showcase unique and delicious Belgian beer styles. This year, 40 Washington breweries will converge at Seattle Center on January 28, 2018 to pour over 100 beers crafted with Belgian beer yeast. Belgian Fest 2018 will be divided into two separate sessions.

Belgian style beers tend to be highly aromatic and here, the yeast is the co-star to the hops, if not the star.  Belgian beer yeast is different than other beer yeasts, tolerating higher alcohol levels and is similar to wine yeast in some ways. Depending on how the brewer controls the fermentation, you can expect to savor lots of beers bursting with fruit and spice notes. Clove tends to be the dominant spice across many Belgian beers while citrus and strawberries grace light colored Belgian beers. Dark colored Belgian beers, with darker malts, may be reminiscent of plums, raisins and figs. Pepper, banana and rose are also commonly associated with Belgian style beers. On the other end of the spectrum, are the Belgium sours, crafted with wild yeasts.

Here are some of the Belgian Beer Styles that you can expect to see at Washington Belgian Fest 2018:

  • Abbeys
  • Browns
  • Dubbels
  • Krieks
  • Lambics
  • Quadruple
  • Saisons
  • Sours
  • Strong Ales
  • Tripels
  • Wits

Belgian Beers can range widely in alcohol content. Farmhouse ales and Saisons were designed to be low alcohol, refreshing drinks after a long hard day of work. Strong ales and Quads take advantage of Belgian yeast’s high alcohol tolerance so plan according. Enjoy the food options available to you at Belgian Fest and arrange for safe transportation home.
