It is indeed the season for the Washington Brewers’ Guild Washington Winter Beerfest, my favorite beer festival. Beer is not just to quench your thirst on sunny afternoons or to kick back with sports. Some of my favorite beers are big winter warmers with layers of flavors like spice, fruit, nuts and a myriad of barrel aged influences. Sipping those tasty Washington brews in a be-ribboned winter wonderland, surrounded by ugly Christmas sweaters at the Winter Beerfest, is the traditional and beloved beginning to my winter holidays.
The 2017 Washington Winterfest takes place in building 30 at Magnuson Park on December 1st & 2nd. Choose between three fun and festive sessions:
Friday night (5:30-9:30pm) is twinkling with bright lights and usually some Friday only pours. Being Friday night and all of the traffic and fatigue that can represent, this is usually the least crowded. You can hear each other talk and are less likely to spill your beer while walking through a throng of beer lovers. Also, this the best time to catch up with your favorite brewer.
Saturday afternoon session (12:00-4pm) often sells out first and is a favorite of beer geeks. Daylight lessens the magical impact of the holiday lights and decor but frees up your Saturday night for more festivities.
- Saturday night (5:30-9:30pm) is a big party of a lot of festive Washington beer lovers. Holiday lights shine brightly in the evening darkness, creating a cheery party environment. You will be rubbing elbows with lots of Santa hats, reindeer antlers and ugly sweaters as you navigate the packed crowd to your next beer. Saturday evening always sells out.
This holiday beer fest celebrates the creativity of Washington breweries. Over 50 Washington breweries will be bringing a huge variety of beers for your tasting pleasure. Here are just a few of the beers you can expect: Brewing Pecan Porter, Splinters Bourbon Barrel Aged Strong Scotch, Choco-Candy Cane Rise & Grind Stout, Chainline Cerné, Cranberry Spiced Oatstanding, Dirty Mo’s Hot Apple Sour, 2017 Bourbon Barrel Aged Dark Star, All Spruced Up Winter Ale, Eggnogen-Weizen, High Camp Winter IPA, Cranberry Kölsch Radler and Check Czech Pilsner. Check out the entire list of 2017 Winter Beer Festival Beer Descriptions.
Beer at the Washington Winter Beerfest isn’t the only outlet for brewer creativity. Although there is fierce competition to win the coveted Peoples’ Choice award for favorite beer, brewers can go a little crazy when it comes to the booth holiday decorating contest. Expect to see lots of Santas but the Game of Thrones Iron Throne, Discotheques (complete with mirror ball) and cloth laden altars have pushed the boundaries in past years.
