I got a sneak peak of the TripV at a New Belgium tasting at The Seattle Beer Authority. The TripV will tap 2/1/10 at the Elysian and other fine Northwest brew pubs. This Washington beer collabeeration is a chocolate cherry present for your Valentine.

The Trip V is an opaque mahogany color, think of a henna hair job on a brunette. The nose is COCOA and coffee, with a hint of cherry.
This another one of those beers that evolve. At the tip of the tongue, it is cherry juice with a bit of fizz. Then comes milk chocolate, sweet and smooth. The finish follows is like a bite of bittersweet cocoa. The Trip V is very drinkable now but I am curious to how it might change with a bit more maturity in a barrel. I hope somebody stashes some away in a barrel so we can find out.

This beer is sweet and intense. I like some malty sweetness in my winter brews but it was a bit too sweet, cherry, coffee and chocolate for my taste. Those just are not my favorite flavors in life. At the Seattle Beer Authority tasting, those that liked a sweeter, almost dessert beer were very happy campers and those that prefer HOP MONSTERS were less impressed. I ranked this as You can have mine not because it is a bad beer, it just didn’t match my taste.  I would rather see someone that really like those big sweet cherry beers drink this one and I will take the sour cherry beers off their hands.
