During dinner at the West Seattle Elliott Bay Brewery tonight, I had the opportunity enjoy a schooner of their cask conditioned Hop Scotch Ale. Lip-smackingly delicious…sweet and smooth on the palate with subtle smokey notes. This Washington cask conditioned beer was served at almost room temperature, allowing all sorts of delicious aromas to waft pleasantly.
This year’s batch of this seasonal ale was dry hopped with Cascade, Amarillo and Chinook hops to bump up the hop aromas. Yet, the hops are subtle in comparison to the malt in this Washington amber. Malt is a very strong component to the flavor of this amber, giving it the slightly sweet butterscotch flavor. It was a rich, smooth and dark amber ale, perfect to enjoy over the holidays or on a cold, dark and rainy evening.
