Winemaker Olympic Festival

Winemaker Olympic FestivalWho says it isn’t an Olympic year? The Winemaker Olympic Festival (formerly the Woodinville Winemakers’ Triathlon) takes place this Wednesday, July 27, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Redhook Brewery in Woodinville, Washington.  More than the name has changed this year, the Winemaker Festival boasts a new format: Olympics, new organizer: Barrel Wine Tours and a new beneficiary: Heartbeat: Serving Wounded Warriors.  Heartbeat provides “emergency assistance, morale-building, and innovative therapeutic services for wounded warriors and their families.

The Winemaker Olympic Festival will put teams of winemakers and brewmasters competing against each other in such events as the Barrel Roll (winemaker inside), Bung Pass, Fill the Bottle, Tug of War, and the Wine Balloon Toss. Each participating winery can enter teams of four or five members.  One of the most fun aspects of past events have been the fun and wacky costumes that the teams wear.

The public is encouraged to join in on the fun with additional games that will be set up around the bowl. Challenge your favorite winemaker to a game or just strike up a conversation with a brewmaster over a cold brew! I had such a blast last year hanging out with the winemakers, but I have to admit my guilty pleasure was watching Bob Betz challenge others to DARE to dunk him.
