The deadline is rapidly approaching to submit your wines to the second annual Evergreen State Fair wine competition. This competition is open to both commercial and amateur wine makers, the submission deadline is July 23rd, 2010. Only wines produced in Western Washington, from 100% grapes grown in Western Washington, are eligible for this wine competition. Wines fermented from any Eastern Washington fruit is prohibited. This is a show case event for the wines grown and created west of the cascades.
Although there were many highlights of the North American Wine Bloggers Conference (WBC) held last month in Walla Walla, one of my greatest disappointments was the lack of representation of the Puget Sound AVA. I didn’t see and taste the hundreds of wines available at the conference but I didn’t, nor do I know of anyone, who had the opportunity to taste a truly Western Washington wine at WBC. I appreciate diversity and I love the different varietals that flourish at different locations of the state. The average wine consumer has probably not been introduced to Sieggerebe, Regents, Madeleine Angevine, Müller Thurgau, varieties that do well on the western side of the state. The Evergreen State Fair wine competition is a great means to introduce the residents of Western Washington to the wine varietals that grow well here.
Each wine will be submitted under a category if it contains 75% of that varietal. Categories for white wines will include Madeleine Angevine, Siegerrebe, Muller-Thurgau, white blends and other white varietals. Reds will include Rosé (varietals and blends), Pinot Noir, red blends and other red varietals. Judges also will consider sparkling wines. No other fruit wines are allowed!
