Raise a pint to Dick Young

Beer lovers are mourning the death of Dick Young, the owner of Dick’s Brewing Company.  Dick Young passed away over the weekend, leaving not only his family and friends in mourning, but brewmasters and beer lovers who shared an appreciation of Dick contribution to the Washington Beer industry.

Dick Young, Dick's Brewing Company

Dick's Brewing Company

Well known for his NW Sausage & Deli in Centralia, where he smoked his delicious meats, Dick ventured into home brewing in 1982. In 1984, the home brewing enterprise converted into a true microbrewery there on the premises. Last year, the brewery moved to it’s open building as a stand alone enterprise.

I had the pleasure to meet Dick at the new brewery last spring, as part of the WABL South-end Brewery  Bus Tour. Dick Young had three beers on tap for his: Dick’s IPA , Dick’s Rye Ale, and his personal favorite, the Dick’s Danger Ale. We loaded up the storage compartment of the bus with bottles of Dick’s Triple Belgium and Dick’s Barleywine to take home with us. Ed and Jonathan loved it so much that they didn’t even share!

Plans are underway to celebrate Dick Young’s life and his contribution to the Washington brewing industry. We will post updates here as soon as we get the details. In the meantime, I have plans to be at Seattle Beer Authority tomorrow to pick up some Dick’s brew and to raise a bottle in his honor. Here are a list of places where you can pick up your own Dick’s Brewery Company brew. I haven’t had a chance to really check the brewpubs yet, but I just verified that two of Dick’s brews are still on tap at Brouwer’s Cafe as part of their Washington Brew week.

  1. Chico says:

Too bad the Triple was finished off so quickly. That and the Grand Cru need to age for a few years and they are so much better. Here is hoping his daughter takes on the brewery as well and continues the tradition.

So sorry to see you go so early Dick. You had talents not many have.
