North American Brewers’ Association Awards Washington Beer Excellence
For three days the judges sampled and sipped some of the best beers in North America. It was a tough job but the North American Brewers’ Association was up to the task of judging more than 1000 beers. 22 Washington beers won medals at the North American Beer Awards, including nine gold awards!
Washington breweries swept the Scotch ale category at the 2010 North American Beer Awards with Laht Nappur the gold, silver to Walking Man Brewery, and the bronze to Black Raven Brewery. Washington also did well in the American Pale Ale Category, winning Gold and Silver. The strong American Pale Ale Gold medal is coming home to Washington as well. I was surprised that Washington was shut out of both the American and English style IPA as many people associate Washington, especially western Washington with IPAs. I certainly do.
I was impressed that Washington breweries, large and small, and from all corners of the state that won awards for their beers. I am ashamed to admit that I haven’t tried Laht Neppur nor Old School House beers yet, but I will be sure to fix that soon!
