For 17 years, I have been teaching breast exams to UW medical students. Less than one week after my first breast exam lab, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Although she survived that episode, she died years later from leukemia, a side effect of her previous breast exam treatment. Her breast cancer treatment was aggressive, requiring radical masectomy, radiation and chemotherapy to combat the disease. Her story is not unique and that is why the Susan Komen 3 Day for a Cureis so important.
I could quote you a bunch of statistics but you probably already know the most vital, because someone you know and love, has fought this disease. Most cancer survivors will tell you that a love of life and support are two of the most potent tools to survive breast cancer treatment. Melon Felons epitomize both. This year’s Melon Felons team is comprised of women who are doing the walk in Seattle or San Diego, or are working behind the scenes. Like the victims of breast cancer, they come from all walks of life, backgrounds and ages. Some Melon Felons are survivors and all are committed to eradicating breast cancer. That talks about their support but this picture shows the love of life as well. Their fundraising efforts are committed to the fun!
