Have you ever wondered how the type of oak barrel a wine is aged in affects the end product? Part of the reason why I am so intrigued by the wines produced by Walter Dacon Winery is because of the way each expresses the various oak barrels in which they have been aged. In March of 2010 when we tasted the2007 C’est Syrah Magnifique at the same time as the C’est Syrah Beaux, we challenged ourselves to figure out which wine had been aged in French oak and which had seen American oak.
Last month, we had the pleasure of tasting the 2007 C’est Syrah Belle, a wine that garnered 90 points from Wine Spectator. While the Syrah grape is known to produce a big full bodied red wine, the C’est Belle is a bit more of a feminine expression of the variety. It’s more likely to give you a light slap on the face and say, “pay attention to me” rather than bonk you over the head and make you feel like you’re in the ring with a pro wrestler.
My fascination with these wines and how each is so different from the others resulted in me pleading with Lloyd and Ann Anderson to make a trip to Seattle to do a tasting at Dish it up! Full disclosure: I work at Dish it up! and organize the shop’s wine events. You see, they really don’t like leaving Shelton. So, to make sure the trip is worthwhile for them, they’ll be part of a big celebration on the opening day of the Magnolia Farmers Market that includes James Beard Award winning chef Tamara Murphy!
Why not join the party? The Market is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in its NEW digs at the corner of West McGraw and 33rd Ave – a half a block from Dish it up! Everything happens this Saturday, June 18th.
11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Dish it up! Chef & Author Tamara Murphy (formerly of Brasa) will be dishing up some fantastic FREE fresh farmers market bites from her new cookbook, Tender. You can purchase a copy, have it personally signed, and feel good knowing that part of the proceeds benefit the growth of the Magnolia Farmers Market.
Tamara’s Menu: Celery Root Soup, Rhubarb Compote with Goat Cheese and Swiss Chard with Garlicky Chickpeas
1 – 3 p.m. Lloyd Anderson of boutique Washington winery Walter Dacon is making a rare Seattle visit to help us experience the Rhône through his wines. Enjoy a complimentary taste of Viognier, Skookum Red, C’est Syrah Belle, and C’est Syrah Beaux while exploring the influence of different types of oak in winemaking.
